Francis Murphy

The Podcast Club

St Ita’s Primary School

St Ita’s is a co-educational primary school in Belfast. It has around 700 pupils with 3 classes in each year group, including 2 nursery classes.

Francis is the Head of ICT and Art and teaches P4. He has started a Podcast Club through use of C2k NewsDesk and this is greatly enjoyed by 15 – 20 of the P4 – P7 pupils.

In this clip Francis tells us about this afterschool club and the effect it had on the pupil’s appreciation of cross-curricular learning through Music, Art and ICT.

Key learning

  • Pupils learn to navigate and use NewsDesk effectively

  • Show an appreciation of an audience and how to share the podcast

  • Develop the ability to plan, record and edit audio using software available on the C2k network

  • Participate in a range of creative tasks to plan the podcast, creating a name,

Points to consider:

  • What audio equipment have you available?

  • Do the pupils participating know how to upload to Google Drive?

  • Think about the room to record in, will it have other afterschool clubs nearby adding background noise?

  • Storyboard the podcast before recording providing cross-curricular links in Literacy, Music and Art

  • Use iPads/tablets that have a voice recorder

  • Use examples of recorded content from NewsDesk to demonstrate the recording process

  • Save recorded content in a shared Google Drive/One Drive folder that can be accessed by all classes to share completed podcast and any relevant drafts
