TPL Thursdays: Taking Boys Seriously
This series is designed for educators, school leaders and youth professionals who want to better understand and respond to the educational experiences of boys and young men. Drawing on two decades of participatory action research in Northern Ireland, the programme focuses on tackling compounded educational disadvantage and promoting holistic outcomes through relational, evidence-informed practice.
What the Series Covers:
Understanding Educational Disadvantage:
Explore the systemic barriers that impact boys’ progress in education and learn how appreciative inquiry and strengths-based approaches can drive improvement.
Relational Education Principles:
Discover the 10 principles of relational education that underpin the Taking Boys Seriously framework, and how these can be embedded to create inclusive, supportive learning environments.
Gender and Masculinities in Education:
Examine how gender shapes educational experiences, affirm positive masculinities, and adopt a gender-conscious lens to challenge harmful behaviours while promoting belonging and respect.
Transformative Practice Across the Ecosystem:
Engage with real-world examples of collaborative practice from schools, youth services, and alternative education settings, highlighting how research and practice inform each other.
Empowering Boys Through Evidence-Based Tools:
Learn to use the Boys’ & Young Men’s Quadrant and the Empowering Boys Questionnaire to amplify student voice, foster interdependence, and strengthen relational empowerment in educational contexts.
Why It Matters:
This series equips professionals with practical strategies, research insights, and collaborative approaches to improve outcomes for boys and young men, ensuring education systems respond to their needs in meaningful and sustainable ways.
