Mathematics and Numeracy

The Numeracy Teams site replaces the Numeracy Fronter Room created by Robert Thompson and Ashleigh Maw (EA – School Development Service). The purpose of the site is to provide resources which support effective learning and teaching of the Northern Ireland Mathematics and Numeracy curriculum throughout the primary years 1-7.

Mathematics and Numeracy

Mathematics and Numeracy is an Area of Learning in the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

In the Foundation Stage, children acquire early mathematical concepts through play-based learning and planned activities that involve sorting, matching, comparing, classifying, and making patterns and sequences. Teachers should enable children to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in, number

including understanding number, counting and number recognition, understanding money, measures, shape and space and pattern and relationships.

At Primary level, teachers should ensure that pupils have an opportunity to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in:

Processes in Mathematics, Number, Measures Shape and Space and Handling Data.

Processes should be at the centre of all Mathematics and Numeracy providing pupils with an opportunity to focus on the how of learning rather than just the what. Children should have opportunities to develop their Cross-Curricular Skills of Communication, Using Mathematics and Using ICT, and their Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities through Mathematics and Numeracy.

At Key Stage 3, Mathematics and Numeracy has two subject strands: Mathematics and Financial Capability. Mathematics helps pupils to develop important skills such as calculating, logical thinking and investigating. It enables pupils to:

  • understand quantity and measures;

  • appreciate patterns and relationships;

  • explore size and shape; and

  • analyse data and chance.

Financial Capability, should provide pupils with opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding of a range of finance issues. Pupils should also develop skills that enable them to make competent and responsible financial decisions.

At Key Stage 3, pupils should also have opportunities to develop their Cross-Curricular Skills of Communication, Using Mathematics and Using ICT, and their Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities through Mathematics and Numeracy.

Problem solving.pptx v 2

Problem Solving

This presentation is suitable for use by teachers of Key Stages 2 and 3.

Objectives

  • to improve teaching and learning in Numeracy across the KS2/3 transition

  • to provide you with strategies, ideas and resources to develop pupils' reasoning and problem solving skills

Reasoning and Problem Solving using Bar Modelling

This presentation is suitable by use for all teachers although the examples given are more Key Stages 2 and 3.

Objectives:

  • to explain bar modelling

  • to show how bar modelling can be used as a problem solving technique

Bar modelling is a strategy used to promote a growth mindset.

See this video for useful guidance on bar modelling.

Mathematical Vocabulary

This book focuses on Mathematical vocabulary as part of the National Numeracy Strategy (England).

The purpose of this book is to identify the words and phrases that children need to understand and use if they are to make good progress in mathematics.

Whilst it is designed to support the National Numeracy Strategy alongside the Framework for Teaching, it contains useful information to help teachers working within the framework of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

Misconceptions in Mathematics

Exposing Errors and Misconceptions (2)

Misconceptions in Mathematics

This presentation is suitable for all teachers.

Objectives:

  • to demonstrate what misconceptions in mathematics look like

Teaching Mathematical Concepts across Key Stages 2 and 3

Arriving in Key Stage 3

This presentation is suitable for teachers of upper Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3.

Objectives:

  • to show how mathematical concepts can be extended across Key Stages 2 and 3

  • to provide examples of the above

Extending KS 2 concepts into KS 3 and beyond
